So I ended up 12 of 23. I started off really strongly, but tapered off in the middle. I think Guillermo Del Toro was robbed.

So I Went and Did It

Last weekend, my parents went to Vegas, and I drove over and spent the weekend with them. In the past, I had absolutely no luck for gambling, but I figured, heck, I have a new positive outlook and good things happen to positive people, right?

I ended up winning a couple hundred bucks off a slots jackpot.

On Monday, I sold my old a/v receiver, which made me sad, kind of, but at some point, I will get a spiffier one. That netted me $300.

Rummaging through dvds and old games, I scraped together a bag of former goodness ™ and went to the local Gamestop. My trade stuff came to $120. I left with a PS3.

So far, I haven’t bought any disc based games. I did plunk $5 on Qbert, and I downloaded the Gran Tourismo demo and Go Sudoku.

Sony will be happy to know I did buy three blue ray movies, though: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (truly a title that will show off the awesomeness of blue ray, for sure!), Sky High (because I skipped the dvd of it and liked it at the movies) and The Descent (because I watched it with my dad over the holidays, but hate their tv).

Now I am stocked up on high def disc formats, with the hd dvd drive from the 360. I am format war immune, now, but obviously I think Sony is going to win, based on the $600 investment in blue ray vs the $200 investment in hd dvd (although there just aren’t that many blue ray movies I want currently).

I had a lot of buyer remorse before I bought the system, but since getting it home and hooking it up, I have felt fine with the decision. I’m anxious now for night to come so I can watch my movies without mean ole ambient light shining in the windows.

John McCain and Iraq

John McCain has gone on record as saying that the war in Iraq has been mismanaged for years.

Regardless of political leanings, this is a breakthrough, but not a good one for Senator McCain. John McCain has a very distinguished war record. I don’t think anyone short of President Bush’s campaign team would try to smear his service record. I think McCain is an intelligent and mostly articulate person who learned a lot in the military and afterwards.

It would be expected that Senator McCain didn’t come to this conclusion over the weekend. Likely he has thought about it since the war began. Likely he watched every day helplessly as our troops were killed in the desert.

Except he wasn’t helpless. He is a long serving member of the senate. Even now, in the new congress, he is the ranking senator on the armed services committee. He could have come out and forced something to happen at any point prior to the post election shakeup in November.

The ramifications of this are profound. If McCain stood up for what he believed, other senators with less clout might have joined him. Maybe years ago there might have been more troops deployed. A better grip on the insurgent situation might be had. We might actually be on our way out of Iraq this year instead of being faced with a Star Trekian Kobiyashi Maru senario.

It’s definite that John McCain cannot be trusted to act on what he knows is right. I am glad this was revealed so early in the election cycle.
