George is screwing over the fans. The dvds being released in September with the original Star Wars movies will NOT be anamorphic widescreen. Bill Hunt of the Digital Bits suspects that the old laserdisc versions are simply being recycled and that for the 30th anniversary next year, the super special set will be released, perhaps with anamorphic widescreen then.
My question is, “Why?” Why would you release the holy grail of fanboy dvd releases only to screw over the fans? Why show so little respect for the people who have supported you even through the shitty prequel movies? Why tease that you are releasing what we want only to throw a big brown turd at us instead?
I will support no Lucas entity until the original movies are out in anamorphic widescreen. I already have dubs of the laser discs on dvd, so why would I rebuy the exact same transfer? I suggest that if you need an original Star Wars movie fix, find some bootlegs on Ebay and let someone from China scratch the itch for you.
If I find out about a petition to do these releases properly, I will post a link. I suppose if there is enough outcry, they could fix it. When Speilberg found out that people would have to pay extra to get the original version of E.T. on dvd a few years ago, he made them change it.
The only problem is that Lucas is in control of these movies so this is likely his deliberate decision to screw everyone over, so why would he bother changing his mind?
